​Managing Director (Care)

Leading on a whole service transformation project to ensure that the specialist care and rehabilitation services, operational team, and business models within the group are fit for purpose to provide the future foundation to develop and then scale the care business through a targeted process of new build developments and/or business acquisitions.

Key responsibilities and achievements including: -

  • Implementation of an ‘Integration Plan’ to ensure new best practice models of care and rehabilitation service delivery were benchmarked, developed, and adopted to ensure industry leading quality standards in customer service and patient outcomes.
  • Achieved the transformation of the Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital into a sustainable and profitable business with a strong foundation for future development plans and expansion.
  • Developed and led a new management and operational structure via the repositioning and recruitment of a central staff team to ensure that new best practice models of service and business expansion plans could be delivered.
  • Created and coordinated a new vision and branding for the services.
  • Engaged with and then responded to an array of NHS CCG Commissioners & Provider Trusts, Medico-Legal experts, Insurance Companies and other stakeholders to develop new service pathways, diversify new routes to market, explore alternative contracting opportunities and public/private partnerships.
  • The redevelopment and expansion of existing sites to meet future service needs and opportunities. Full Pre-application approval achieved for a circa £10m strategic redevelopment plan for Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital increasing its capacity by 30 beds.  Kings Lodge Complex Care Centre (Full planning approval achieved for significant site redesign, extension & upgrade)   
  • Delivered new build expansion opportunities with an array of regional stakeholders and development partners (3 sites delivered and under negotiation with one project progressed to outline planning and funding stage)  
  • Assessed and the carried out detailed operational due diligence on a multiple array of potential strategic care business acquisition and merger opportunities. (Two separate and significant formal offers made for two multi-site purchases following NDA and achieving preferred bidder status)
  • Led as NHS service tender lead for new site and service developments with a significant external project and funding partner.
  • Completed detailed investor and development funding negotiations with a range of debt, equity and joint venture parties.  
  • Directed the Care Board and provided line management support for Operational, Medical, Business & Hospital Directors.
  • Full reporting responsibility to Group Board and Shareholders and supportive involvement with core Group Business.

Forming groundbreaking service and business relationships to deliver the new service vision including: -
  • Established a strategic staffing partnership with Northumberland Tyne & Wear Foundation Trust shortlisted for an NHS Innovations ‘Bright Ideas Award’.
  • Negotiated a ‘Provider to Provider’ contract to co-deliver an NHS contract for Vascular Rehabilitation Services with South Tees Hospitals Foundation Trust.
  • Developed a service partnership with the North East’s largest Housing Association (Thirteen) to deliver a fully integrated care and rehabilitation pathway from hospital to home.  
  • Gained support from the NHS ‘Academic Health Science Network’, who commissioned an Independent Health Economic Report into the service vision & Keiro Model. This report from York University both financially quantifies significant cost savings and strategically qualifies the Model.
  • Brokered strong working partnerships with an array of 3rd Sector, Education, Community Interest, and other Private Sector organisations.
  • The Keiro Model evidenced as a Model of Best Practice by NHS England in their Commissioning Guidance for Rehabilitation (March 2016).
Property Development and Project Planning
  • Coordinated the project appraisal, complex multi-agency development deal, the design and build of the £10M Gateway project.
  • This public/private Health, Housing and Community partnership opened in January 2014 – It has been widely recognised as an exemplar project: -
    • Pinders National Healthcare Design Awards: Best Specialist Care 2014.
    • RICS – North East: Best Project & Community Benefit Awards 2014.
    • Building Better Healthcare National Awards: Best Supportive Living Project 2015.
    • Building Better Healthcare National Awards: Client of the Year 2015.
 
​Keiro Limited
A specialist care provider with two sites in the North East comprising of 100 CQC registered beds, mostly dedicated to patients with Acquired Brain Injury (ABI), spinal injuries, neurological conditions, and other complex needs. Both facilities include community health and wellbeing hubs. The Gateway facility (now operated as ‘The Bridge’ by Elysium Healthcare) had an industry-first array of transitional and accessible housing developed and run as a public/private partnership with Thirteen the region’s largest a not for profit Housing Association.
 
Whickham Villa (1997 - 2012)

  • Responsible for the profit and loss of a 65 bedroom Nursing Home for the elderly and its day to day operational management, including: - Governance, Finance, HR, Purchasing, Marketing, Business Development, IT, Estates & Leadership of +125 employees.
  • New business plan formulated to diversify the older persons service into a new specialist healthcare market for younger adults with disabilities.
  • Delivered on the new business plan including the financing, planning, design, commissioning, marketing, and operations of a new 22-bedroom rehabilitation unit for adults with complex disabilities on an adjacent site to the existing care home in 2000.
  • Completed the design and build of a new accessible £1m Healthclub with an 8-bedroom extension to the rehabilitation unit in 2007.
  • The innovative design of the project was recognised by winning the Pinders National Design Awards for the ‘Best Specialist Healthcare’ development 2007.
  • Increased business turnover from circa £1m to over £3m per annum with £1m+ Ebitda performance.

I am a former member of the British Judo Team and an Olympic Squad Member. I have competed extensively in Great Britain and abroad. I am a previous Commonwealth Judo Champion and a Judo Coach.
 
I am a former longstanding Trustee of two Charities; Tees Valley, Durham & North Yorkshire Neurological Alliance; and a Founding Trustee of ‘Brainbox’, both of which seek to support people and their families affected by neurological conditions and improve their quality of life. I am the Vice Chairman of the Thames Valley Acquired Brain Injury Forum and a founder member of the Independent Neurological Providers Alliance
